A 15-year-old high school student in China stopped coming to school because she had been married off illegally by her parents.
When the new term started in March, the student didn’t turn up. The principal contacted the girl’s parents, who explained they were in a sticky situation – the girl had gotten engaged to a 25-year-old man in the same village and had left the house.
They said they had already received wedding presents from the man’s family, so they thought it would be difficult to protest the engagement, even though they were worried for their daughter.
The parents had hired the man to help them around the house.
The principal engaged the authorities, who told the parents to return the wedding gifts and ensure the girl returned to school the next day.
But the girl still didn’t come back to school.
The authorities were forced to confront the parents again, and the truth was revealed – the parents were in the middle of a divorce and neither wanted responsibility for their daughter. So they had sent her off to be married in exchange for money.
As soon as the investigation began, the mother secretly fled and her whereabouts is currently unknown. The 15 year-old girl is left with only her father.
