BLACKPINK’s “Pink Venom” References A Famous Song That’s Making Us Feel Old As Heck

Once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.

BLACKPINK is finally back in your area with “Pink Venom,” a new hip-hop track that blends sweetness with power.

BLACKPINK’s Lisa

The “Pink Venom” music video showcases the members’ femme fatale aesthetics while taking viewers on a visually stunning ride. It also pays tribute to BLACKPINK’s past with clever homages to previous videos.

Hawk-eyed BLINKs spotted nods to “KILL THIS LOVE” MV, “Playing With Fire” MV, and more, but the song includes a few throwbacks too. In the first verse, Lisa sings, “one by one then two by two” to a familiar tune. Where have we heard it before?

Answer: “Pon De Replay” by Rihanna. She sings slightly different lyrics, “It goes one by one, even two by two” to a similar beat. BLACKPINK did not sample “Pon De Replay,” but rather used an interpolation; they recreated the original sound.

“Pon De Replay” was all the rage when it was released in 2005, 17 years ago. Fun fact: This song is the same age as some 4th generation idols, including XG‘s two youngest members, Cocona and Maya!
