There Is A New Song Called “I Hate You SEVENTEEN” On Music Charts… And Fans Find It Offensive AF

“I hate you, I really hate you all…”

A comic “Hongdae Idol Group” Ship Jansen, as introduced in the group’s album details, released a new song on March 2, 2020, titled, “I Hate You SEVENTEEN“.

The lyrics for the first half of the song explain why the “hatred” grew.

My young niece, who once told me she loves her uncle the most, has fallen in love with SEVENTEEN. She used to say she wants to marry a man like me — but now she uses me for money. She spent her savings on the last concert. She spent all her cash on fan merchandise. And when she said, “I love you, uncle”, I spent all my money on the concert tickets. I hate you SEVENTEEN. I hate you, I really hate you all. I find it weird that there are only 13 of you. I hate you SEVENTEEN. I hate you, I really hate you all. Please help my niece quit being a fangirl by telling her to study.

Then, in the second half of the song, the lyrics grow even more aggressive:

My niece went to your last concert. She called me saying she missed the last bus home. Last year, her other uncle went to pick her up. She talked him into buying her 13 copies of your CDs. These CDs have the same songs on them, so why are you selling them with different photos in them? You pure evils. Why are there so many of you? Why are there so many merchandise? You made her spend all her Lunar New Year money too. I hate you SEVENTEEN. I hate you, I really hate you all. I find it weird that there are only 13 of you. I hate you SEVENTEEN. I hate you, I really hate you all. Please help my niece quit being a fangirl by telling her to study.

Finally, the song ends in all hopelessness:

She promised that once she enters high school, she’ll focus on her studies. So her other uncle ended up buying her concert tickets. But I remember she made the same promise to me last year. So I hate you SEVENTEEN. I hate you, I really hate you all. I find it weird that there are only 13 of you. I hate you SEVENTEEN. I hate you, I really hate you all. Please help my niece quit being a fangirl by telling her to study.

This song — written from the point of view of an uncle whose niece is in love with SEVENTEEN — is meant to be humorous, or “uselessly high quality and blatantly funny” as also introduced in the group’s album details. Unfortunately, SEVENTEEN fans did not find the humor and are now thoroughly offended by the song.

As soon as I type in “SE-” on Melon, “I Hate You SEVENTEEN” is the first one suggested. I’m f*cking appalled.

— Fan

Other idol groups’ fan bases have also come to agree that, had the song been about their groups, it would have triggered them as well.

  • “I get how this could have been humorous, but these lyrics really stepped over the line.”
  • “??????”
  • “Doesn’t matter who this is about; If the lyrics say things like, ‘I hate you’, ‘You’re weird’, and ‘You pure evils’, it’s offensive to anyone, period.”
  • “High quality? Funny? LMAO. This is not funny at all.”
  • “I’m not even SEVENTEEN’s fan but this is offensive. I’d be pissed if this happened to my bias group.”
  • “I’m a Carat and I’m pissed. If it was funny in any way, I would have looked past it… but this is all too offensive and I’m triggered. He could have focused on dishing at his fangirl niece. But he stepped over the line when he dished at the idol for it.”
  • “I think if the lyrics were funny, this would have worked. But this isn’t humorous, this is rude… I can’t imagine how SEVENTEEN fans must feel about this.”
